DeepWiki MCP server from Cognition (Devin): a free hosted endpoint with three tools to read and ask questions about public GitHub repositories' generated documentation. No install, no API key.

Security Reviewed

Hosted, no credentials, 3 read-only documentation tools; data you send goes to mcp.deepwiki.com; no source available to audit.

Install DeepWiki in Google Antigravity

Antigravity reads MCP servers from ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json (all projects) or .agents/mcp_config.json (one project) (official docs).

EasiestOption 1: paste this to your Antigravity agent
Install the "DeepWiki" MCP server for Google Antigravity.
Follow the steps at https://www.antigravityskills.org/install/deepwiki.md (source: https://docs.devin.ai/work-with-devin/deepwiki-mcp).
Before running anything, show me what you will download and whether it includes scripts, and wait for my OK.
Ask me for any keys or paths it needs. When done, check that it is listed under Installed MCP Servers.

The agent reads the install file, shows you what it will download and waits for your OK.

Option 2: install it yourself
  1. 1. Open the MCP config in Antigravity

    Agent panel '...' menu > MCP Servers > Manage MCP Servers > View raw config opens mcp_config.json (global: ~/.gemini/antigravity/mcp_config.json on macOS/Linux). See our Antigravity MCP guide for the 2.0 Settings > Customizations route and the CLI /mcp check.

  2. 2. Add the remote server
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "deepwiki": {
          "serverUrl": "https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }

    Antigravity needs serverUrl, not url, for remote servers. The DeepWiki docs do not mention Antigravity, so this applies Antigravity's documented remote format to DeepWiki's documented endpoint. No headers or token are needed for public repositories.

  3. 3. Restart and check

    Restart Antigravity (or refresh the MCP servers list). 'deepwiki' should list read_wiki_structure, read_wiki_contents and ask_wiki_question. If it shows no tools, check that the key is serverUrl. Then try the first example prompt.

This is a hosted MCP server, not a skill folder, so nothing goes in .agents/skills/. We have not run these steps inside Antigravity.

What is DeepWiki?

DeepWiki is a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp, run by Cognition (the company behind Devin). It does not run on your machine and has no source repository to read: your agent connects to the URL and calls tools that return DeepWiki's generated wiki for a public GitHub repository, or an AI-written answer grounded in that wiki. It is a connector, not a prompt skill, so nothing goes in .agents/skills/. It is useful when you want an agent to get oriented in a library you did not write before it edits or integrates it.

How to use DeepWiki?

Add the endpoint to your client's MCP config, restart, then name a repository in owner/repo form in your request. The agent decides which of the three tools to call: the structure tool lists topics, the contents tool returns the wiki, and the question tool answers a specific question. Large repositories produce long wiki output, so asking a narrow question is usually cheaper for your context window than reading the whole wiki.

Key features of DeepWiki

  • ✓We called the live endpoint on 2026-10-15 (initialize, then tools/list, no credentials): it reported serverInfo DeepWiki 2.14.3 and returned exactly 3 tools: read_wiki_structure, read_wiki_contents and ask_wiki_question
  • ✓Documentation and live server disagree on one name: the Devin docs page lists the question tool as ask_question, the live tools/list returns ask_wiki_question. If a saved prompt calls the old name, use the name your client shows
  • ✓Per the live tools/list schemas, read_wiki_structure and read_wiki_contents take one required argument, repoName (owner/repo, e.g. facebook/react); ask_wiki_question requires repoName and question, and repoName may be a list of up to 10 repositories
  • ✓The server's initialize message lists many more tools marked 'private mode only' (Devin session, playbook, knowledge and similar management tools). Those were not returned to us without credentials; the public endpoint exposed only the 3 above
  • ✓Two wire protocols per the docs: Streamable HTTP at /mcp (recommended) and SSE at /sse, which the docs call legacy and being deprecated
  • ✓Client config field differs: the docs say Devin Desktop uses serverUrl while most clients use url. Antigravity's remote MCP key is also serverUrl (see our Antigravity MCP guide)

When to use DeepWiki

  1. 1Getting oriented in an unfamiliar open-source library before you integrate it
  2. 2Asking where a behaviour is implemented in a public repository without cloning it
  3. 3Comparing how two or three public repositories solve the same problem (the question tool accepts up to 10 repositories)
  4. 4Pulling a repository's documentation structure into context before planning a change

Installation & Setup Guide

MCP Server Integration

Follow these steps (taken from the project's own docs) to configure DeepWiki in your development environment.

Step 1: Claude Codeclaude
claude mcp add -s user -t http deepwiki https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp

Command from the DeepWiki docs page. Adds a user-scoped HTTP server.

Step 2: Cursor and other clientscursor
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "deepwiki": {
      "url": "https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Config from the docs page for most clients; the docs warn that the wrong field name makes the server silently ignored.

Usage Example & Verification

Prompt / Request Example
1. (our example)
Use DeepWiki to list the documentation topics for modelcontextprotocol/typescript-sdk, then tell me which topic covers writing a server.
-> Calls read_wiki_structure with repoName set to that repository.

2. (our example)
Ask DeepWiki how request routing works in vercel/next.js and summarise the answer in five bullet points.
-> Calls ask_wiki_question; the answer comes from DeepWiki's generated wiki, so check important details against the source.

3. (our example)
Use DeepWiki to compare how expressjs/express and fastify/fastify register middleware, and keep it under 200 words.
-> Calls ask_wiki_question with two repositories in repoName.

Full review: scope, findings, risks
Audit Scope:Devin docs page work-with-devin/deepwiki-mcp (fetched 2026-10-15), plus a live unauthenticated call to https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp: initialize and tools/list. Documentation and protocol check only: no source code, license or commit exists for the hosted server, and we did not call the three tools on any repository or connect it from Antigravity.
Key Findings:Hosted service by Cognition. The public endpoint accepted an unauthenticated session and exposed 3 read-only documentation tools (serverInfo DeepWiki 2.14.3). Its instructions text also names Devin management tools labelled private mode only, which were not listed to us. The docs say the SSE endpoint is being deprecated. The docs name the question tool ask_question; the live server names it ask_wiki_question.
Identified Operational Risks & Permissions:Low to medium. No local code runs and no credentials are used, but every question and repository name is sent to a third-party service, and answers are AI-generated and unverified. Do not include secrets or private project names in prompts.

We read the official docs page and called the live endpoint with an initialize request and a tools/list request, with no authentication. The server returned its version, its instructions text and 3 tools whose schemas take only repository names and a question. We did not call the tools, so we make no claim about the quality of the answers, rate limits or retention. This is a check of public documentation and protocol responses, not a penetration test or code audit.

Operational Notes & Known Limitations

Known Limitations

  • •Public repositories only; the docs point private repositories to a Devin account and the separate Devin MCP server with an API key, which we did not test
  • •Answers are AI-generated from a generated wiki. They can be out of date or wrong; treat them as a map and verify against the code
  • •Hosted service: the repository names and questions you send go to mcp.deepwiki.com. Do not put secrets or private code names in questions
  • •We could not review source code, a license or a commit because none is published for the hosted server; this review covers the documentation page and the live protocol responses only
  • •We have not connected it from Antigravity; the Antigravity entry below is the standard remote-server form from Antigravity's MCP docs, not a tested result

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DeepWiki MCP safe to use?

Nothing runs on your machine: it is a hosted, credential-free endpoint with read-only documentation tools. The risk is what you send: repository names and questions go to mcp.deepwiki.com. We could not review source code because none is published; our check covered the docs page and the live protocol responses.

How do I install DeepWiki in Antigravity?

Add a deepwiki entry with serverUrl https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp to Antigravity's mcp_config.json and restart. The official DeepWiki docs do not mention Antigravity, so this uses Antigravity's standard remote format and is untested by us.

Is DeepWiki MCP free, and does it need an API key?

The docs describe it as free and no-authentication for public repositories. Our unauthenticated call to the live endpoint succeeded.

Which tools does it have?

Three public ones, confirmed from the live tools/list on 2026-10-15: read_wiki_structure, read_wiki_contents and ask_wiki_question (the docs page still calls the last one ask_question).

Can it read private repositories?

Not through this endpoint. The docs send private-repository users to a Devin account and the Devin MCP server with an API key.
