OpenClaw's OpenHue skill: lets an agent control Philips Hue lights, rooms and scenes through a Hue Bridge with the openhue CLI.

Security Reviewed

Instruction-only skill with no scripts; it runs openhue commands that change Philips Hue lights through a bridge on your local network.

Install Smart Home (OpenHue) in Google Antigravity

Antigravity loads skills from .agents/skills/ in your project or ~/.gemini/config/skills/ for all projects (official docs). Full guide

EasiestOption 1: paste this to your Antigravity agent
Install the "Smart Home (OpenHue)" skill for Google Antigravity.
Follow the steps at https://www.antigravityskills.org/install/smart-home.md (source: https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/tree/main/skills/openhue).
Before running anything, show me what you will download and whether it includes scripts, and wait for my OK.
Install it into this project (.agents/skills/) unless I say global. When done, check that Antigravity lists it as an installed skill.

The agent reads the install file, shows you what it will download and waits for your OK.

Option 2: install it yourself
  1. 1. Install the OpenHue CLI
    brew install openhue/cli/openhue-cli

    This is the install method in the skill's own metadata (Homebrew). Check with openhue version afterwards.

  2. 2. Pair it with your Hue Bridge
    openhue setup

    Run it in a terminal and press the button on the bridge when asked. The CLI stores the bridge IP and an application key in ~/.openhue/config.yaml (per cmd/setup/config.go).

  3. 3. Download only the openhue skill folder
    git clone --depth 1 --filter=blob:none --sparse https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw /tmp/openclaw && git -C /tmp/openclaw sparse-checkout set skills/openhue && git -C /tmp/openclaw log -1 --format=%h -- skills/openhue

    The openclaw repository is large, so this sparse clone fetches just skills/openhue. The last change to that folder at our review was 4355299 (2026-10-14); a different hash means the skill changed after our review.

  4. 4. Copy it into this project (workspace skill)
    mkdir -p .agents/skills && cp -r /tmp/openclaw/skills/openhue .agents/skills/

    Run from your project root. Antigravity then reads .agents/skills/openhue/SKILL.md.

  5. 5. Or install it for all projects (global skill)
    mkdir -p ~/.gemini/config/skills && cp -r /tmp/openclaw/skills/openhue ~/.gemini/config/skills/

    Use this instead of the previous step. For the Antigravity CLI the global folder is ~/.gemini/antigravity-cli/skills/.

  6. 6. Check that Antigravity sees it

    Antigravity 2.0 app: start a new conversation and ask "What skills do you have?" (the app has no /skills command). Antigravity CLI: run /skills; in a session that was already open, run /skills reload first. The skill is listed as openhue.

The skill has no README and its SKILL.md does not mention Antigravity; the openclaw metadata block in its frontmatter is for OpenClaw and is simply ignored elsewhere. Alternative without the skill: the OpenHue CLI README documents an MCP server started with openhue mcp (command "openhue", args ["mcp"]); Antigravity reads MCP servers from ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json in the same mcpServers format. The README shows this config for Claude Desktop, not for Antigravity.

What is Smart Home (OpenHue)?

For people who already own a Philips Hue Bridge and want to switch lights and scenes by asking their agent, instead of opening the Hue app. openhue is one of the skills bundled in the OpenClaw repository: a single SKILL.md that teaches the agent the commands of the separate OpenHue CLI (openhue), which talks to the bridge on your home network. What we counted at commit a0436bf (2026-10-14): 1 file, 112 lines / 2,435 bytes; 16 example commands (3 openhue get, 13 openhue set); 3 quick presets (bedtime, work mode, movie mode); 5 "do not use" cases. It is one of 49 skill folders in the openclaw repo's skills/ directory. We also read the OpenHue CLI it depends on (openhue/openhue-cli at 08e940a): its get and set commands cover only light, room and scene (plus get events), so the Hue zones that SKILL.md mentions under "When to Use" have no matching command; and the CLI ships its own MCP server (openhue mcp, 6 tools per its README), which is an alternative to this skill.

How to use Smart Home (OpenHue)?

Install the OpenHue CLI, pair it once with your bridge (openhue setup, then press the bridge button), copy the openhue folder into Antigravity's skills folder, and ask in plain words: "dim the living room lights", "movie mode". The agent should first list names with openhue get room or openhue get light, because the set commands need the exact light, room or scene name, and then run a command such as openhue set room "Bedroom" --on --brightness 30.

Key features of Smart Home (OpenHue)

  • ✓List lights, rooms and scenes (openhue get light | room | scene)
  • ✓Turn single lights or whole rooms on and off
  • ✓Brightness 0-100, color temperature 153-500 mirek, color by name or hex (--rgb "#FF5500")
  • ✓Activate a Hue scene in a given room (openhue set scene "Relax" --room "Bedroom")
  • ✓3 ready-made presets in SKILL.md: bedtime (20 % / 450 mirek), work mode (100 % / 250 mirek), movie mode (10 %)

When to use Smart Home (OpenHue)

  1. 1Switching lights off or on from the agent chat
  2. 2Setting a bedtime, work or movie lighting preset
  3. 3Activating a Hue scene in a specific room
  4. 4Checking which lights are on

Installation & Setup Guide

Agent Rules / Prompt Setup

Follow these steps (taken from the project's own docs) to configure Smart Home (OpenHue) in your development environment.

Step 1: Claude Code and Cursor: not documented by the projectclaude

OpenClaw does not document installing this bundled skill in Claude Code or Cursor, so we do not list a path.

Step 2: Claude Desktop: OpenHue MCP server (OpenHue CLI README)claude
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "openhue": {
      "command": "openhue",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Documented in the openhue/openhue-cli README for claude_desktop_config.json. This uses the CLI's MCP server (6 tools: list_lights, list_rooms, list_scenes, set_light, set_room, activate_scene) instead of this skill.

Usage Example & Verification

Prompt / Request Example
1) SKILL.md example ("When to Use"): "Dim the living room lights"
-> What should happen: the agent runs openhue get room to find the exact room name, then openhue set room "Living Room" --on --brightness <lower value>. If your room is called something else, the set command fails until the agent uses the listed name.

2) SKILL.md example: "Set movie mode"
-> What should happen: the agent uses the movie preset from SKILL.md, openhue set room "Living Room" --on --brightness 10. The preset assumes a room named "Living Room".

3) Our example: "Activate the Concentrate scene in the office, then tell me which lights are on."
-> What should happen: openhue set scene "Concentrate" --room "Office", then openhue get light to read back the state. Only scenes that already exist on your bridge can be activated; the skill cannot create new ones.
Installation Confirmation Method

Run openhue get light in a terminal first: if it lists your lights, pairing worked. Then ask "What skills do you have?" in a new Antigravity conversation (CLI: /skills) and look for openhue.

Instruction-only skill with no scripts; it runs openhue commands that change Philips Hue lights through a bridge on your local network.

Full review: scope, findings, risks
Audit Scope:openclaw/openclaw at a0436bf (HEAD on 2026-10-14): skills/openhue/SKILL.md in full (last changed in 4355299, 2026-10-14; diffed against our earlier review at 493b90b: one wording change in "When NOT to Use"), the list of skills/ folders, LICENSE. OpenHue CLI (openhue/openhue-cli at 08e940a, 2026-05-12): README.md, the cmd/get, cmd/set, cmd/setup and cmd/mcp file lists, cmd/setup/config.go and openhue/config.go (grep for config path and TLS settings). The CLI's Go code was not reviewed in full.
Key Findings:Instruction-only skill: one SKILL.md, no scripts, no allowed-tools field. It requires the openhue binary (metadata requires.bins) and documents only openhue get and openhue set commands. No URLs to fetch, no environment variables, no API keys. The skill itself writes no files; openhue setup writes ~/.openhue/config.yaml with the bridge IP and application key. openhue/config.go connects to the bridge over HTTPS with InsecureSkipVerify: true (no certificate check).
Identified Operational Risks & Permissions:The agent can switch and recolor real lights in your home whenever a request matches. The bridge key in ~/.openhue/config.yaml lets anything on your machine control the bridge. The CLI skips TLS certificate checks to the bridge, so it trusts whatever answers at the configured IP on your network.

Static review at commit a0436bf. skills/openhue/SKILL.md contains frontmatter (name, description, homepage, an openclaw metadata block that requires the openhue binary and lists the Homebrew formula openhue/cli/openhue-cli) and Markdown instructions; there are no scripts or other files in the folder. The 16 example commands are openhue get light|room|scene and openhue set light|room|scene with --on/--off, --brightness, --temperature, --color, --rgb and --room flags. Traffic goes only to the Hue Bridge on the local network. In the OpenHue CLI (08e940a) the setup command stores the bridge IP and application key in ~/.openhue/config.yaml, and openhue/config.go and cmd/get/get_events.go set InsecureSkipVerify: true for the bridge connection. The CLI also offers an MCP server (cmd/mcp) that this skill does not use. No telemetry was found in the files we read.

Operational Notes & Known Limitations

Known Limitations

  • •Philips Hue only. SKILL.md lists other brands, HomeKit scenes or Shortcuts, TVs, thermostats/HVAC and non-Hue smart plugs as "do not use" cases
  • •Needs the openhue binary. The only install method in the SKILL.md metadata is the Homebrew formula openhue/cli/openhue-cli; for Linux or Windows you have to follow the OpenHue docs (openhue.io), which we did not check
  • •SKILL.md never names the pairing command; the agent only learns "first run requires button press". In the CLI the command is openhue setup (we read cmd/setup in openhue-cli)
  • •Zones are mentioned in "When to Use", but the CLI has no zone command (we counted the get and set subcommands)
  • •Colors only work on color-capable bulbs; the presets assume rooms named Bedroom, Office and Living Room
  • •The bridge must be on the same local network as the machine running the agent
  • •Difference from the other OpenClaw pages on our site (apple-music, sag-voice): those drive media apps and a TTS service; this one changes physical devices in your home

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Smart Home (OpenHue) skill safe?

In our static review of commit a0436bf it is one SKILL.md with no scripts. It tells the agent to run openhue get and openhue set, which only talk to your Hue Bridge on the local network. The real effect is physical: the agent can switch your lights. The OpenHue CLI keeps a bridge key in ~/.openhue/config.yaml.

How do I install it in Antigravity?

Install the OpenHue CLI with Homebrew, run openhue setup and press the bridge button, sparse-clone openclaw/openclaw, copy skills/openhue into .agents/skills/ (or ~/.gemini/config/skills/), then ask "What skills do you have?" (CLI: /skills).

Does it work with Google Home, Alexa or HomeKit?

No. SKILL.md lists non-Hue devices and HomeKit scenes or Shortcuts as cases where the skill should not be used.

Does it need an API key or a cloud account?

No. It needs a Hue Bridge on your network; pairing creates a local application key on the bridge, not a cloud login.

Skill or MCP server: which should I use?

The skill is a text guide the agent reads; the OpenHue MCP server (openhue mcp) exposes 6 typed tools. Both need the same CLI and pairing. Use the skill if you prefer plain commands you can read in the chat.
